His name was Roy Sands, and he had everything to look forward to. He was getting out of the service and coming home to marry his beautiful Fiancee. He had his debts paid, money in the bank, and a happy new life ahead of him. Then he disappeared.

I see that there was a bit of confusion as to the title Vanished, by different authors. I read Vanished by Mary McGarry Morris, and it was quite a strange and disquieting experience.

The book is dark, and most of the characters we meet seem to lack the intelligence and/or sensitivity to have a conscience. Although Wallace (Aubrey Wallace) is a sympathetic character and is an innocent (to a certain extent), it seems that he does not have the brain-power to see the evil around him. He meets Dotty one afternoon, and she just takes him over, and he sits there in the stolen vehicle, oblivious as to what he should do. The stealing of the young child by Dotty meets with no stern disapproval from Wallace, although he knows it is wrong. Dotty just tells him to "Drive! Drive!" and they leave the scene, and keep traveling. They call the little girl "Canny" and thoughtlessly travel, with Dotty being a core of evil, as she steals regularly along the way, to get the trio food and lodging. Wallace follows Dotty's lead; they make some money by selling their goods at flea markets.

The story takes an even darker turn when they encounter an ex-convict who is brutal - a real match for Dotty. At this point, I was getting concerned for Wallace and Canny (the little girl), because it seemed that Dotty was getting tired of their vagabond existence and started to want more, and at the same time, she starts to view Canny as a problem. Wallace becomes concerned about Canny, whom he loves as if he were her natural father; she calls him Poppy.

The characters are pathetic but there is a hint of danger too. The author excellently brings these strange, and ultimately desperate characters to life, so that the reader does get involved in their story. Wallace may have the best "soul" of the adults, but he is hampered mentally and cannot really construe a plan to bring Canny to safety.

The book is so well written that I believed everything that was happening. It almost felt like a true account. Writers this good can make even the likes of Dotty and the convict seem real. And I had to keep reading, if for no other reason than to see how things ended!

Five Stars for a terrific reading experience.

A real intriguing book filled with suspense loved it that's a must-read
After years of reading Danielle Steel ...this book told me more about our author... She must have a true spirit and love for her family. It's like walking into a room and smelling the fragrance...I thank you..Enjoyed . DB
I loved it! I had read this book many years ago but it wasnt till now that i stumbled apon it again. It beautifully written. Just thinking of the sorry teddys mother went through and yet how much courage and strength she had to continue, serves as a real example to those who left themselves wither away when fate deals them a bad hand. Love the book. I highly recommend it.
The author won a book award for Vanished and it was made into a movie !
Taut and intriguing. Cannot imagine how she develops such interesting
complex characters and their adventures. But they do show up on the TV news
eventually.

There certainly are these strange types running around complicating
our lives and Mrs. Morris gathers them together in her books.
Wow! This story will stay with me for a long time. I’d love to read a prologue of Dotty’s story and also a book about Cannie and her future.
How does one attempt to relate to you how engrossing this story is? There are some strong emotions and issues going on with this story. Briefly, the story revolves around a young female con-artist, Dottie, who by chance (and only chance) happens upon a slow witted man, Aubrey Wallace. Aubrey has a (bitter) wife and family of his own, but is constantly berated and harrassed by her. Aubrey and Dottie link up in a freak meeting and he is literally overwhelmed..from that moment on he is under her control and she takes every advantage of it. A young toddler, Cannie, gets snatched right out of her own house and from under her distracted mother. Suddenly, the toddler finds herself a new mother and father. Her new mother is but an immature, self-centered child herself and only took the child for use as a smoke screen to avoid her past. For mentally challenged Aubrey, his heart rules his head in many instances, and he genuinely grows to love and adore Cannie, as Cannie grows to love him and believes both of them to be her parents. A child's allegiance is strong, and this bond introduces disastrous consequences. Years pass as they remain homeless and always trying to keep one step ahead of detection by the law. Their life is pathetic and heart wretching. As the situtions become more complicated, Aubrey struggles with right and wrong, love and abuse. All the time you are reading, you know at some point the deception has to end. The ending is a surprise and extremely intense. You will find yourself torn with loyalties and attachments on both sides of the issue. Mary McGarry Morris is brilliant
I love a good detective novel, and the Audible narration associated with this ebook is excellent. I appreciate the author's whimsy, visible even in the title of his series, and the realistic expression of how long-term investigators of human nature evolve over time as they continue to encounter the darker side of their fellow creatures, and themselves. While I continue to find the ends of these books to be surprisingly depressing, I enjoy every minute of the read and have plenty of laughs along the way.
