Daylight on Iron Mountain David Wingrove 9780857893451 Books

I liked the first prequel better, but this is still a very good read, and keeps me motivated and moving to read the entire series. After the world "as we know it" (in the future) was torn down in the 1st prequel, it's rebuilt in this book with all the accompanying intrigue and plot convolutions one would expect from a talented author. I've heard Mr. Wingrove compared to Frank Herbert at times, who is the King in my mind, but I have to agree that he has vision and depth on a scale with Master Herbert himself. Considering this series was written 20ish years ago, David Wingrove has a sort of prophetic view of where this world could go, and is going.

You won't regret reading this book and this series, but start with the first prequel!

Daylight on Iron Mountain David Wingrove 9780857893451 Books Reviews

Totally enjoyed All the books in this series. He was able to project the political future in a scary realistic way. Looking at China!s rise in power & influence it makes a good case for the possible future of World Piwer!
Just the right format for David Wingrove's epic Sci Fi Classic. Please get this book and read what could become one of the best stories of the last two decades. For some the task is daunting giving the subject matter, but this could be future is just as valid as something from the pen's of Terry Brooks, George R.R.Martin or Kevin J. Anderson.
Book two in this epic series introducing a whole new set of characters, but with enough links to make it worth your while to follow.
Daylight on Iron Mountain is book 2 of 20 in David Wingrove's recasting of his Chung Kuo series. Book 1 is entitled "Son of Heaven" (also available for the kindle) and you must read that one before you read this one. The reason I say "whew" in the heading is because for the longest time this book ("Daylight") was available only on the U.K. kindle.

Daylight on Iron Mountain continues the narrative that started with Son of Heaven but to the satisfaction of many fans this book goes more into important characters like Tsao Chun and Amos Shepherd.

The Chung Kuo series is very much worth your time and investment so be sure to check these books out. I've already said much about this in my review of Son of Heaven so I don't want to repeat myself about how great this series is. You can easily find my previous review if you visit the Son of Heaven page considering it's the top one on the list of reviews. I implore you to give this series a chance if this is the first time you've even heard of this author. David Wingrove is in my opinion one of the greatest science fiction authors of all time. He is up there with Frank Herbert. Also, considering how cheap these kindle versions are as of the writing of this review I believe these novels deserve a chance from you, and if you give them that chance you will not walk away disappointed.
This story at times is hard to read...the injustices of the society...the cruelty of the characters. Which makes it all the better when the good people fight back! It's painful because you care about everyone and it maked me even more thankful for the beautiful diversity I see around me when I pull my nose out of my kindle.
Like the first prequel, Wingrove does a great job laying the foundation for his Sci-Fi Epic. I couldn't put it down and read it inside a couple days. The only complaint I had, and why I didn't give it 5 stars, is that he doesn't devote enough time to the actual conflicts or battles. Conquests of America, the Middle East and even the fate of the Emperor are mearly summarized. It's still a very compelling story, but it would've been better with a bit more action.
This second volume in the series covers the same key characters from the earlier, but we also meet the architect of the new Chinese world. The first three-fourths move quickly with the usual Wingrove twists and turns, and then the war between the seven and the ruler erupts and the book becomes hard to put down. The glacier of "ice" (the building material used to construct the massive cities) has settled on the world and as the old generation dies off the indoctrination takes hold. Interesting to see how quickly ideas like freedom and self-determination fade.

Good read, violent images, discussion of genocide, torture, some sexual references, not for kids, read my review of vol 1 for some thoughts on eastern utopia imagery in the series.
